Strange problem with C64.

Post by IseyO »

Just got a C64 off of craigslist, and it boots to blue screen with border and no text, but there is a question mark in the top left corner. From what I read it seemed like a basic rom problem but I haven't found anyone else with this question mark. Anyone have an idea as to what is wrong?

Hi,

Power supply could cause this (as well), if it's not capable to maintain +5VDC, as the load conditions are changing.
Failure of the BASIC (and maybe the KERNAL) ROM might be confirmed, if the machine boots up from a cartridge.
Defective RAM chip(s) may also prevent the machine from boot.

you usually have to scavange 2 or 3 broken commodores to get one commodore up and running, keep shopping, buy more commodores, this will give you a stockpile of chips and other stuff.. You can usually keep one running doing this..

Or just send it to Ray Carlsen who will repair it.
